Troika. Russian food restaraunt in Montreal.

Couple of days ago my friend called me. He said we should meet up for something quick. So i go to see him, turns out he wants to check out a Russian restaurant. He had a prior agreement with another common friend of ours, but it was canceled last minute.

Knowing the fact that I’m very low on money, he offered to pay for my meal (Thanks Anton). So, a quick glance to my schedule said, that I postpone work for another day, besides I felt really tired, and not motivated to do anything.

Locating the place. Turns out I’ve walked by it many times. And maybe noticed it first time, but never noted the name. The inside is decorated with wall to wall red and gold velvet. I suppose, as in ones mind, a stereotypical place that Russians would have. The type that was either in the mob or close to the government in the Kremlin.

The services was excellent, everyone on the staff speaks Russian.

The food was good. We wanted to have “first” dish which means some sort of soup. They only had borscht (spelling in transliterated Russian, is a bit of a problem). The borscht was good, it was lacking meat, and a bit of lard. Yes, we use lard to cook things; and lard gives a unique taste to it. On the bright note, it was served with pompushky. Little white bread balls with garlic butter and spices on top.

For the “second” I had what’s named in English as Chicken Kiev. It’s a ground chicken cutlet with a butter in the middle. As you probably have guessed the food isn’t exactly Russian, it Franco-Russian cosine.

The music was most excellent. Musicians (violin and guitar) make very good combination. I think i might have heard the guitarist slack off once or twice, but other then that, they were great. Two musicians make rounds by walking up to you, and asking what would you like to hear. If you can’t name it, you can hum it, sing a few verses, or try to describe, or even name a movie where it is from. They will play it. I was impressed.

I liked the place. It’s not for my pocket but I can see why someone would come here.
